Comin At Ya from Cuba

I took a brief vacation last week (yeah, yeah, my life's a vacation whatever) to head to the new place-to-be: Cuba.  In all seriousness - I haven't been somewhere in over a year without my lap top or checking wifi speeds so this was actually a break.  I assume I'm still getting no sympathy...

Havana was a really cool spot to check out because it's completely frozen in time.  Everywhere you go there's old cars and beautiful old architecture.  It's a shame that most of these buildings were unable to be maintained because even with what's left, you could tell this city was once a stunner. I can see why Hemmingway didn't want to leave.

Strange things I learned in Cuba: toilet seats are not sold with toilets and therefore most do not have them.  If you're going soon, plan accordingly.  Breakfast isn't a huge meal here but we found one place called El Cafe that was healthy and delicious, I highly recommend stopping by.  Other travel tips: when you hop in an old beautiful car for a tour do NOT comment on how shocking it is that so many of these cars still run.  It will break down.

Plaza San Francisco which held this massive church.  I know I swore of churches after South
America last year, but this one was worth revoking my ban.

The adult-sized Barbie car we rented for our tour around Havana.  After 15 minutes and two
stops we broke down and got stuck in the Revolution Plaza which is famous for Castro giving
a ten hour speech.  It was fun for about 30 minutes to soak up the sun, then we recruited a
coconut cab to get us home.

Possibly the best part of Cuba was the live music everywhere.  If you got lucky you'd catch some dancers busting out some
authentic salsa too.

Did I mention the cars here are incredible?

And the streets were gorgeous too. This was on the walkway from our apartment to the airbnb
our friends were staying in.   Cuba's such a hot-spot right now we ran into some fellow New
Yorkers as soon as we arrived!

This was our ride to the beach, Santa Maria Del Mar.  Luckily our broke-down-car story only happened once and this trip was
smooth sailing.

El Capitolio.  Pretty big building for a one party system right?

Every little kid we saw had this uniform on and they were adorable.

Our first night in Havana our airbnb host arranged for us to have dinner at a local restaurant.  What we didn't know was that he
had guests at other locations that would be joining us.  We ran into these lovely ladies from Belgium for the rest of the evening and split some cocktails at Floridita bar (Hemminway's old hang) before parting ways.  Nothing like brushing up your Spanish and your French all in one trip right?

And finally, the aforementioned coconut cabs.  This was our favorite way to cruise around Havana.  There are going to be a lot more photos on my instagram so follow @rabsontheroad for more!
